She never thought of being an actor initially. She was into fashion journalism and had worked for the Image magazine. She then became a wardrobe assistant for the series The Tudors. While working in the series, someone suggested Katie McGrath try acting, so she sent a couple of photos to Irish agents.

Her acting career began with the short film Pebble in 2007, followed by a TV movie, Damage. A year later, she worked in the TV movie Eden, Freakdog, Merlin, and the miniseries, The Roaring Twenties.     

In 2009, Katie appeared in an episode of the series The Queen, and after two years, she worked on the TV movie, A Princess for Christmas.
