James started his broadcast career in 1973, from WTBC radio in Tuscaloosa where he worked in night shift. James volunteered several hours in the 1974 Alabama tornadoes in Jasper, AL for WTBC radio. Then he moved towards television in the summer of 1978 at 33/40 predecessor WCFT in Tuscaloosa. Â He also worked in WSFA as sportscaster and weatherman.
After that, he was hired as a chief weatherman at WAPI-TV in Birmingham. James was among the youngest chief weatherman in the country at the age of 23. He then worked for various other media like WVTM-TV, KDFA, and WRBC-TV. He joined ABC 33/40 in 1996 and is working as Birmingham's ABC affiliate ever since. James also serves as an anchor for WeatherBrains, a weekend weather podcast.

James is serving as a founder of The Weather Factory that provides broadcast weather forecasts to numerous radio stations and weather data for industrial and business clients. He was the 33rd person to get Certified Broadcast Meteorologist of AMS distinction. James is also popular among viewers for his encyclopedic knowledge of Alabama geography. He is the president of a non-profit institution which webcast three streaming radio stations which feature worship music in English and Spanish, named AllWorship.com. He is also a board chairman of the Children's Hospital of Alabama. He also worked as a Sunday school teacher outside Birmingham in Double Oak Community Church
His Married Life, Wife, and Children
James is married to Karen Spann for 35 years now. The couple is blessed with two sons, J.P and Ryan and one of them has already completed high school. He shared about his wife with medium.com  on 2016, where he told,
