After his graduation in 1981, Terry played the college basketball in North Carolina State. He played for teams like Valvano and the 1983 basketball champion Wolfpack.

Later, after some years of a basketball career, Terry moved towards broadcasting and joined ABC Sports in 1991, as a writer /commentator for college basketball. Later in 2010, Gannon joined The Golf Channel and the NBC. Till this date, he is working as a play-by-play announcer covering thePGA Tours.  Apart from golf, he has also covered rowing and kayak.
