ABC News’ health correspondent, Jennifer Ashton’s ex-husband Dr. Robert C. Ashton, 52, dies by committing suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge on Saturday.
Robert jumped at around 8:40 a.m. and his body was recovered shortly after he jumped along the Hudson River around the area of Palisades Interstate Park. A Port Authority Police spokesperson said to PEOPLE that Robert committed suicide only two weeks after his divorce from Jennifer.
Ashton who has two teenage children from her ex-spouse took to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to give a tribute to her late husband. 47-year-old MD Ashton shared an image with her late husband and their kids on her Instagram where she wrote-
“Our hearts [are] broken that the father of my teenage children took his own life yesterday. As an MD he helped so many and we will remember his warmth, generosity, and kindness.”
For the people who are struggling with depression, Ashton used the moment to encourage them. To the people who are struggling, she said-
“We know that many families struggle every day with depression while others like us don’t have any warning. We hope by sharing some of Rob’s story, it will save others the heartache we feel.”
She ended a message with a pleading-
“You are never alone [Please] get help, May Rob Rest In Peace, forever in our hearts.”
According to Fort Lee Daily Voice, Jennifer’s ex-husband was a chief thoracic surgeon at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and thoracic surgery director at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
