Bowen Yang is a comedian who became a celebrity overnight after being the first Chinese-American cast member of Saturday Night Live on 12 September 2019. He is also the 3rd openly gay member of the cast. With him being in such a position, many people from the LGBT and Asian communities are following him closely.

Bowen Yang was born on 6 November 1990 in Brisbane, Australia. His parents had both emigrated from China in the 1980s. Thus, he belongs to Asian-American ethnicity.

The family later moved to Aurora, Colorado, where Bowen grew up. The comedian also has a sister named Yang Yang.

He graduated from the Smoky Hill High School in 2008 and enrolled in New York University (NYU). He got a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology because he wanted to be a doctor after watching Sandra Oh in Grey's Anatomy.

Bowen was a huge fan of Saturday Night Live as a kid. He used to know all the updates and news regarding the show but he had never pictured himself in the show because he had never seen any diverse faces in the cast.
