Ellen Rona Barkin was born in The Bronx, New York on 16 April 1954 to Evelyn Barkin (nee Rozin) and Sol Barkin. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Siberia and the Belarusian-Polish border.

The actress grew up in The Bronx with her brother George Barkin.

The actress has the brains to go with her beauty; she graduated with a diploma from the prestigious Manhattan’s High School of the Performing Arts. Later, she earned a double-major in History and Drama from the Hunter College. To further hone her craft, she also attended New York City’s Actors Studio.

At the age of 65, Ellen has had her fair share of broken hearts and failed relationships. Earlier in her life, she was romantically linked with actor, Gabriel Bryne. They met at the set of Siesta in 1987 and began dating soon after. A year later, they tied the knot on 18  September 1988.

In 1989, they grew their family and welcomed a son named Jack Daniel Bryne. The couple later added another member, their second son Romy Marion Byrne in 1992. However, in 1993, Ellen and Gabriel separated due to undisclosed reasons and officiated their split with a divorce in 1999. 

Just after a year of the divorce, Ellen rang the wedding bells with Revlon's CEO, Ronald Perelman. They got married on 28 June 2000. But, after being married for nearly six years, the relationship ended. The couple divorced on the 14th of February 2006.

In 2011, she was rumored to be in a relationship with a much younger guy. The man in question was Sam Levinson. He is the son of Barry Levinson, who helped launch Ellen’s career back in 1982 with the movie Diner.

Then again, in 2015 the actress was with British lawyer, Ben Emmerson. The pair started dating after they met in Italy and got engaged just a few months later in February of 2015. However, with the pace of things, Ellen returned the engagement ring and called off the wedding due to fear that the two were moving too fast.

Ellen had humble beginnings in the showbiz industry. She started her career back in 1978 with an uncredited role in Up in Smoke. However, it wasn’t long until she started gaining traction and landed roles in significant roles.

In 1981, she starred in the role of Chris Capoletti in We're Fighting Back. The actress also performed off-Broadway in plays like Shout Across the River, Extremities, Fool for Love and Eden Court.
