American Fashion: History, Top Brands And Famous Designers

The American fashion scene is usually known for its casual appearance and focus on utility and comfort rather than sophistication (for the most part). But, the American fashion trend has not always been this casual.

Before a while ago, Americans used to dress as non-casual as possible. If you look back only a hundred years ago, the most casual dress you could find on the US streets were sportswear and knitted golf dresses.

However, with the passing of time, the dress-up culture in the US has gone through a paradigm shift. It now encompasses almost everything as casual - from jeans to NBA jerseys.

History of American Fashion Scene

The transition that the fashion scene has gone through in the US is pretty massive. So massive that it's hard to contemplate in a few words. But in a nutshell, the history begins around the Industrial Revolution in the early-19th century.

The Industrial Revolution revolutionized the apparel business in the US. After the period, the clothing business flourished in America. Further, with the use of Radio, paper printing, and billboards, the clothing manufacturers advertised their products to the urban population, especially the youths.

Then came the film industry, which provided the business with another huge boost. It was especially helpful during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Celebrities became the forefront of the fashion scene.

World War II followed the Great Depression, and it was a time when the fashion industry in the US felt a minor halt. Due to the war, there was a lack of luxury materials such as silk for expensive clothing. But the US, as it always does, adapted. And, the lack of materials, in turn, gave birth to military uniforms as a casual clothing choice for the people - a style fitting the time of war and chaos.

Then, came the Cold War - the fight against international communism. The US approached the war from the point of appearance. The advertisement industry flourished, and in turn, gave a boost to consumerism, especially in the fashion scene in the US. People were encouraged to look nice, have perfect bodies, and look better than the Soviets in any way possible. Housewives started putting on makeup, pretty dresses, and jewelry. The men were encouraged to maintain a clean, shaven, and corporate look.

However, the 1950s brought a different kind of outlook in the fashion scene, introducing unorthodox style clothes. Music stars such as Elvis Presley made blue jeans, black leather pants, and rebellious youth look mainstream.

Fast forward to the 1960s, and the fashion trend changed again. People began to reject the accepted fashion choices and began to appear more hippy-like. They were keeping long hair and long beards and mustaches, and blue jeans became a big thing around that time.

As for the blacks, they too stopped copying others in terms of appearance. Instead, they chose to keep their afros instead of straightening them out and embraced their African-style clothing.

Now comes the time of the popular culture of fashion, beginning from the 1980s. This period introduced a certain amount of flashiness into the apparel scenery, with men and women opting to wear metallic and glittery dresses.

After the introduction of the 21st century into people’s lives, hip-hop and Adidas rose into prominence. The fashion culture is ever-changing, with people now opting for what feels right and what feels good wearing rather than conforming to the general consensus about what to wear and what not to.

Top Brands And Famous Designers

Many brands come and go in this super-competitive world of fashion apparel, and most of them go unrecognized and underappreciated. However, there are certain brands of fashion-wear that have been around forever, it seems.
