There are times when a person just gets overwhelmed with the joy that surrounds them, but that glee might not always last long.

For a mother, being pregnant and giving birth to a child becomes the ultimate joy, but it all gets blurred out when they have to choose between their family and their work.

Victoria Azarenka, a prominent name in the tennis court, faced a similar situation when it dropped down to choosing between her baby and her career due to complications with her husband. But what the loving mother did is heartwarming!

Bewildering Choices for Victoria Azarenka: Baby Son or Career?

It all began on 20 December 2016. The gates of joy flooded over Victoria when she welcomed her baby son and decided the baby name to be Leo. The 29-year-old got blessed with the most handsome looking little man, a baby she welcomed with her boyfriend, Billy Mckeague.

The couple never disclosed when they started dating, but they did, however, make it public about their split. Victoria and Billy are not married, and their relationship ended in that manner, making them each other’s former partner.

However, the timing of their split was not suitable, as it came just after the 2017 Wimbledon Tournament in July, which had already caused Victoria tad bit of problems with its tough scheduling.

The new mother had to deal with tournament scheduling first and then her split with partner Billy; weighing a little too heavy on the new mother.

The two times Australia Open champion then was slammed, with a custody battle for her son Leo, which made things even more difficult; both personally and professionally.

Son Over Everything!

While the custody battle with Billy, who split with Victoria before getting married and being her husband, was rattling, a significant event in Victoria’s life also approached. The US Open!

Things got even more complicated when the hearing judge ruled that the couple’s son, baby Leo would have to stay at California where he was born, while the tournament was hosted in New York City; a traveling distance of over four and a half hours even by flight.

Despite US Open being a massive deal for Victoria, she did not want to leave her newborn baby son in California; she just couldn’t take the risk.

“I am sadly unable to compete in this year’s US Open due to my ongoing family situation that I am working through. While I will dearly miss being in New York and playing in one of my favourite tournaments where I have enjoyed some of the best moments in my career, I am already looking forward to being back next year.”

The Belarusian player additionally expressed her feelings on a personal note from her Instagram, saying,

“Shortly after Wimbledon, Leo’s father and I separated and as we work to resolve some of the legal processes, the way things stand now is that the only way I can play in the US Open this year is if I leave Leo behind in California, which I’m not willing to do.”

Eventually, she had to miss the US Open Tournament. However, it seems that her sacrifice has paid her well because she frequently posted pictures with her son; hinting that she might have won the custody battle. But still, Victoria had not confirmed anything.

Although the initial court ruling forbade Victoria from taking her child out of California, the judge showed leniency back in May 2018 allowing the tennis star and her son to travel to Europe to participate for the Madrid Open.

Moreover, Victoria looks on the bright side of things, as she expects to reconcile her differences with Billy even after the split, so their son can have love and time from both parents.

“I remain optimistic that in the coming days Leo’s father and I can put aside any differences and take steps in the right direction to more effectively work as a team and agree on an arrangement for all three of us to travel and for me to compete but, more importantly to ensure that Leo has a consistent presence from both of his parents.”

Victoria, who still lives in her Manhattan beach house with Billy despite the duo breaking up their romantic relationship, won the legal custody of her child in a verdict which was ruled by a California judge back in January 2019.

While her former boyfriend had three weeks to appeal against the court's ruling starting from 15 January 2019, it seems unlikely the latter verdict will be any different.

With the court's decision by her side, Victoria is insisting on moving to her homeland in Belarus as soon as she can. However, she also wants her former boyfriend to be there for Leo as she doesn't hope to bar her son from getting the love of both his mother and father.
