Dwayne Johnson’s Mother Ata Johnson's Struggle With Mental Health, Her Rocky Divorce, And More

Former wrestler, Ata Johnson, is the mother of the famous Dwayne Johnson. Though the family might seem all in glory now, they had to endure tough times in the past.

Ata’s marriage with Rocky Johnson was a rocky one, and it got huge press attention as Rocky was already a famous face in the world of wrestling.

A Rocky Married Life!!

Ata’s married life was not all flowers and sunshine. Her married life to the Canadian professional wrestler Wayde Douglas Bowles, famously known as Rocky Johnson, was, in fact, a rocky one. 

The two had a classic first meet as they first exchanged gaze on the independent circuit, where the two were tag team partners and fell in love. But the love also was an extramarital affair as Rocky was already married to his then-wife Una. However, he married Ata only after he got divorced from Una. 

While the two lovebirds were planning to get married, their marriage was not welcomed by Ata's father as he himself was a wrestler. Her late father, Peter Maivia, was a professional wrestler who understood the cons of marrying a wrestler.

Nevertheless, as the rebel Ata was, she went by her heart and got married. She got married to the wrestler in 1978. And after six years, Ata gave birth to the famous Dwayne Johnson, who we all know as The Rock.

However, within a decade of their marriage, the pair started to have troubles in their life. 

Rocky, back in 1987, was arrested and charged for a series of sensitive issues that ended his glorious career. He was blacklisted from wrestling, landing him on an ambling path of alcoholism.

 The claims, as much as damaging were for the wrestler, were equally damaging for Ata and her family.

Amongst all the media frenzy and slanders, Ata decided that it would be best for her and her son to move away from marriage, resulting in a split-up with Rocky Johnson. Sadly Rocky passed away in 2020. 

Mourning his 75-year-old father, Junior Johnson took to Instagram to post a heartfelt video of his late father’s wrestling match.

The Jumanji fame went on to write, 

You broke color barriers, became a ring legend and trail blazed your way thru this world... Dad, I wish I had one more shot to tell you, I love you, before you crossed over to the other side. But you were ripped away from me so fast, without warning...

Challenges With Mental Health

Ata Johnson, age 72, is famously known as Dwayne Johnson’s mother, but her presence extends way past that. She, more than a wife and a mother, is a survivor. The proud warrior has battled cancer, a tragic accident, and a near suicide attempt. 

Her suicide attempt had been kept under the dark until Dwayne’s post, where he revealed how strong his mother is. 

Sharing a happy picture of him and his mother on Mother's day, he wrote, 

My mom’s been thru it all....cancer survivor, evictions, head-on collision by a drunk driver, suicide attempt (still to this day she has a zero recollection of me pulling her off the middle of the highway avoiding oncoming traffic), and decades of being married to a ramblin’ pro wrestler.

It seemed like the harsh past life took a massive toll on the former wrestler's health. However, she now seems to have powered through the past and moved on with her life.

Ata Fitisemanu Maivia, aka Ata Johnson, belongs to an all-wrestler family. Both of her parents have been prominent figures in the wrestling world.

Her parents, Late Lia Mavia and Late Peter Mavia have made remarkable achievements in the span of their careers. However, their daughter Ata that stands at the height of 5 feet 9 inches, does not lag when it comes to the wrestling field.

She also was a wrestler once and was fairly popular. 

Despite enduring all the hardships, the string mother has been stable in her life now and has an accumulated net worth of over $1 million.
