Diana had been married to her husband, Douglas Wayne Shanks, for nearly 30 years when the couple became aware of Doug's health condition. Following their wedding in November 1985, the duo had never faced such a disastrous situation until then and had lived a peaceful family.

After undergoing extensive medical checkups, Doug was diagnosed with Amyloidosis, a rare disease in November 2014.

Further, another tragedy struck the family as the couple's son, Nathaniel Williams Shanks, who worked as the US Air Force's pilot, suffered a deadly road accident the following year in 2015.

Diana, who is the mother to two more children from her marriage to Douglas, was left in charge after all the men of her family were left incapable of performing even their regular duties.

Nevertheless, the journalist took all the responsibilities and supported her husband throughout his chemotherapy. She then took care of her son during his recovery from the accident while also taking care of her other children, Amy Shanks, and Laura Sutton Shanks; earning the title of "Mother of the Year" in 2018.

Diana's husband also eventually healed from his disease and celebrated his 33rd wedding anniversary with his wife in November 2018. With Douglas being finally recovered, the couple can now focus to build their marriage stronger.

Despite her short height of only five feet five inches (1.60 m), she soon became a favorite with the viewers and even focussed on keeping her weight in check so as not to lose her fans.
