Her father works as an independent commercial arbitrator and mediator whereas her mother works for a French transport and power equipment company named Alstom as a marketing communications manager. 

Sunlen, who stands at the height of six feet, is a married woman. She wrote her married chapter by tying the knot with her husband Alexis Serfaty in August 2013. The wedding was held at Rose Park in Washington and was blessed by an Episcopal priest named Emily Guthrie.

The couple was first introduced by mutual friends after they first met in Washington in August 2006.

Sunlen's husband, Alexis is a policy adviser at the Department of Transportation in Washington. He is the son of Gail F. Serfaty and Simon H. Serfaty. Alexis' parents are both primarily from Washington.

His mother is now retired as the director of the State Department in Washington while his father works as a senior professor of United States foreign policy at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Sunlen and her husband currently lead a successful married life. The couple has also become parents as they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Roosevelt in May 2017.
